beehiiv Podcast Hosting Review: Is It Good for Creators Who Also Run a Newsletter?

beehiiv's podcast hosting suits creators who already run, or plan to run, a newsletter: the Free plan covers one show and 5,000 monthly downloads at $0. Ads, private subscriber feeds and a second show require a paid plan. Skip it if you only want a standalone podcast host.

beehiiv is a newsletter platform that added podcast hosting in April 2026. That changes who the hosting is for.

The limits are not obvious. A monthly download cap, ads that need a paid plan and a revenue split on programmatic ads all sit in different places on beehiiv's site. We analyzed its pricing page, help center and launch posts as of November 6, 2026 to put them in one spot. We did not test the product ourselves.

What Does beehiiv Podcast Hosting Include?

beehiiv's launch post (April 2, 2026) says you can "host, distribute, and monetize your podcast directly on beehiiv." Here is what the official pages describe:

One more limit: podcast shows cannot be moved between beehiiv publications yet. The help center does not list a maximum episode length, so check that on the official site too.

If you want to see the newsletter side first, our full beehiiv review covers the platform, its pricing and the Free plan.

How Much Does beehiiv Podcast Hosting Cost?

According to beehiiv's launch post and help center, podcasts are included on every plan. What changes is the ceiling. The Free plan costs $0 and allows up to 2,500 subscribers. The table below shows the podcast limits by plan.

PlanPrice (Lite and Pro: annual billing, up to 1,000 subscribers)ShowsMonthly downloadsPrivate feedsDynamic ad insertion (per pricing page)
Free$015,000NoneNo
Lite$49/mo ($59 billed monthly)215,0001Yes
Pro$95/mo ($109 billed monthly)Unlimited50,0002Yes
EnterpriseCustom pricingUnlimited100,000+UnlimitedYes

Lite and Pro prices depend on list size. The ones above are for the "Up to 1,000" subscribers tier, and the pricing page lists 11 tiers up to 250,000+. Check the current price on the official site for your list. The dynamic ad insertion column follows the pricing page, but the podcast features page still says "coming soon." We cover that conflict below.

Does "No Download-Based Pricing" Mean No Download Cap?

Not quite. The April launch post says "No download-based pricing," "No per-episode fees" and "No storage caps that force you to pay more as your catalog grows." The pricing page and help center, which we checked on November 6, list monthly download limits of 5,000, 15,000, 50,000 and 100,000+.

We do not know what happens when a show passes its monthly cap, because no official page we found says. If your show may pass 5,000 downloads, ask beehiiv before you commit.

The same post also says "beehiiv doesn't take a cent." It dates from April, before the October 27 ad launch, and the help center describes a revenue split on programmatic ads, as the next section shows.

How Does Podcast Monetization Work on beehiiv?

There are four routes, and each has its own rules:

The programmatic details matter. According to the help center, ads pay per impression. It gives no CPM and promises no minimum. Payouts arrive monthly, three months after each earning month closes, on the 20th. October earnings, for example, are paid by January 20. Moving from Lite back to Free ends programmatic access from then on.

Pro and Enterprise add targeting by device and location, frequency limits and third-party tracking. Without a published CPM, you cannot estimate what any of this will earn.

One contradiction to know about. The pricing page and help center list dynamic ad insertion as available on paid plans, and the help center says it only works on your public RSS feed. The podcast features page still says it is "coming soon." We went with the newer help center, but confirm before you plan around it.

Can You Move a Podcast In or Out of beehiiv?

Moving in is well documented. Any show hosted elsewhere with a public RSS feed can be imported. You must paste an RSS or XML address, because links from Spotify, YouTube or Apple Podcasts pages will not work. Show metadata and episodes carry over as-is, and original episode GUIDs are preserved.

Two things do not carry over. beehiiv does not import historical download statistics, and it does not publish future episodes for you automatically. The 301 redirect is set up with your previous host, after you confirm the import is complete.

Moving out takes a few steps: open the show's Distribution tab, click the gear icon in the RSS section, enter your new RSS feed URL and save. beehiiv says that creates a redirect and that most apps update within a few days. The article does not cover exporting audio files or analytics, so check that before you leave.

Best for: newsletter creators who want hosting, episode pages and email in one workspace, starting on the Free plan with one show and 5,000 monthly downloads.

Not ideal for: podcasters who only need a standalone host, or shows that may pass 5,000 downloads a month, since the official pages do not explain what happens at the cap.

How Does It Compare With Substack and Buzzsprout?

The free tiers measure different things, so we list them side by side instead of ranking them:

Substack. Its podcast page says Substack takes 10% of paid subscription revenue, and standard Stripe processing fees also apply. Every paid subscriber gets a private RSS feed for paid episodes. Substack also says it can publish video episodes to YouTube automatically and that its download analytics are certified by IAB Tech Lab. Those are the company's own claims. The page lists no download caps, file-size limits or episode-length limits, and we could not load its help center, so we cannot compare those with beehiiv.

Best for: newsletter writers who want to host at no monthly fee and give each paid subscriber a private feed.

Not ideal for: creators who need an exact total-cost comparison from us. Substack takes 10% plus Stripe fees and charges no monthly hosting fee, while beehiiv's FAQ says it takes 0% of paid subscription revenue and its pricing page lists paid subscriptions under Lite and above (Lite is $49 a month billed annually at up to 1,000 subscribers). We did not verify beehiiv's card fees.

Buzzsprout. A dedicated podcast host. Billed annually, Audio costs $15 a month and Audio + Video $25, each with up to 72 hours of uploads a year. Multi-Podcast costs $30 a month with up to 180 hours. Audio + Video publishes video on Apple Podcasts, Spotify and YouTube. A fair price comparison needs one caveat: beehiiv Lite at $49 a month (annual billing, up to 1,000 subscribers) includes the newsletter platform, while the Buzzsprout pricing page covers podcasting only. We did not verify Buzzsprout's monthly-billing prices.

Best for: podcasters who only need hosting and want upload-hour allowances spelled out on the pricing page.

Not ideal for: anyone planning to stay on its Free plan long term, which includes 2 hours of uploads each month and hosts episodes for 90 days.

Which One Should You Actually Use?

Pick by the job, not the brand:

Choose beehiiv if the podcast supports the newsletter, or the other way around. Skip it if the podcast is the whole business.

What Could We Not Verify?

Some answers are missing from the official pages we read:

None of this makes the hosting bad. It means you should ask before building a business on it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is beehiiv podcast hosting free?
Podcasts are included on every beehiiv plan, and the Free plan costs $0 for up to 2,500 subscribers. It allows one show and 5,000 monthly downloads. Podcast ads and private subscriber feeds need a paid plan.
Does beehiiv take a cut of podcast ad revenue?
For programmatic ads, beehiiv's help center says you keep a share of gross revenue: 50% on Lite, 55% on Pro and 60% on Enterprise. It does not state beehiiv's share. Direct sponsor campaigns are different, because beehiiv says it does not manage that revenue.
Does beehiiv charge a fee on paid podcast subscriptions?
The pricing page FAQ says beehiiv takes 0% of your paid subscription revenue, and the page lists paid subscriptions under Lite and above. We did not verify card processing fees, so check them on the official site before you compare against Substack's 10%.
What happens if my podcast passes 5,000 downloads a month?
No official page we found explains it. The launch post says "No download-based pricing," but the pricing table lists monthly download limits by plan. Ask beehiiv before you rely on the Free plan for a growing show.
Can I import my existing podcast into beehiiv?
Yes, if your current host provides a public RSS or XML feed. Episodes, metadata and original GUIDs carry over, but historical download statistics do not. You set up the 301 redirect with your old host after confirming the import.
Which audio formats and file sizes does beehiiv accept?
The help center lists MP3 or WAV with a 500 MB maximum per episode. Older launch posts also mention M4A, but we would follow the newer help center. The maximum episode length is not stated.
How does beehiiv compare with Substack for podcasts?
Substack says it charges no monthly hosting fees and takes 10% of paid subscription revenue, plus Stripe fees. beehiiv's pricing page FAQ says it takes 0% of paid subscription revenue, and the page lists paid subscriptions under Lite and above. Substack's podcast page does not list download limits, so we cannot compare them.
